An Act to make provision for the Amendment and Title. Continuance of "The Maori Representation Act, 1867," and "The Maori Representation Act Amendment and Continuance Act, 1872."

Be It Enacted by the General Assembly of New Zealand in Parliament assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:—

1.The Short Title of this Act shall be "The Maori Representation Short Title. Acts Amendment and Continuance Act, 1875."
2.The words "the said Act" wherever hereinafter used shall Interpretation. mean "The Maori Representation Act, 1867," as amended by "The Maori Representation Act Amendment and Continuance Act, 1872," and this Act shall be deemed and taken to be part of the said Act, and shall be read therewith.
3.From and after the passing of this Act, the number of persons Number of Maori Members of House of Representatives increased to seven. to be elected to represent, in the House of Representatives, the inhabitants of the Colony of New Zealand of the Maori race shall be seven instead of four, as provided by the said Act.
4.The names of such electoral districts and the number of Names of districts, and numbers of Members for each. Members to be returned by each such district shall be as follow:—
  • The Northern Maori Electoral District, one member.
  • The Waikato Maori Electoral District, one member.
  • The Bay of Plenty Maori Electoral District, one member.
  • The Eastern Maori Electoral District, one member.
  • The Taranaki Maori Electoral District, one member.
  • The Cook Strait Maori Electoral District, one member.
  • The Southern Maori Electoral District, one member.
5.Each such district shall (subject to the powers given by the Districts defined. said Act to define alter and amend the boundaries of Maori Electoral Districts) comprise so much of the Colony of New Zealand as is included within the boundaries given under the name of such district in the Schedule to this Act.
6.The persons at present representing Maori Electoral Districts New districts to be represented by present sitting Members defined. in the House of Representatives shall be deemed and taken to represent the Maori inhabitants of the new districts set opposite their respective names hereunder, as fully and effectually as if such persons had been duly elected under the said Act and this Act to represent such new electoral districts, that is to say,—
7.As soon as conveniently may be after the passing of this Act, After passing of Act elections to be held for return of additional Members. the Governor shall cause elections to be held in manner provided by the said Act and this Act for the return of duly qualified persons to represent the Waikato Maori Electoral District, the Taranaki Maori Electoral District, and the Bay of Plenty Maori Electoral District.
